Product Overview

Turkey Red Oil (TRO), also known as Sulfonated Castor Oil or Sulfated Castor Oil, holds the distinction of being the world’s first synthetic surfactant – developed in the 19th century for use in textile dyeing and still an essential industrial raw material today. It is produced by treating refined castor oil with sulphuric acid under controlled temperature and agitation, followed by neutralization with caustic soda, resulting in a partially sulfonated ester with excellent self-emulsifying and surface-active properties.

Turkey Red Oil is an anionic surfactant – it carries a negative charge in solution – and is the only naturally derived oil that is completely water-miscible and self-dispersing in water. This unique property makes it invaluable as an emulsifier, wetting agent, levelling agent, and dispersing agent across a broad range of industries.

At Nova Industries, TRO is manufactured with precise control over sulfonation degree, pH, and active content to deliver consistent performance for our customers in textiles, leather, paper, agriculture, and cosmetics.

What Turkey Red Oil Does & Buyer Problems It Solves

What It Does:

  • Functions as a complete water-dispersible anionic surfactant – unlike regular castor oil, Turkey Red Oil disperses completely and uniformly in water to form stable, transparent or translucent solutions, making it useful in any application where an oil-water system needs to be stabilized.
  • Acts as a levelling, wetting, and penetration agent – in textile dyeing and finishing, TRO ensures uniform dye distribution across fibres, prevents streaking and patchiness, and improves the penetration of chemical auxiliaries into fabric structures.
  • Serves as an emulsifier and lubricant in leather and industrial applications – TRO is used in leather fat-liquoring as a dispersing and softening agent, and as a wire drawing lubricant, metal processing aid, and antistat agent in industrial applications.

Buyer Problems It Solves:

  • If your textile dyeing operations suffer from uneven colour, poor penetration, or fabric damage – Turkey Red Oil improves dye bath uniformity and fibre penetration, resulting in more consistent, higher-quality dyeing and printing output.
  • If you need a natural, bio-based anionic surfactant that is water-soluble and does not leave an oily residue – TRO’s unique water-miscibility makes it a superior choice over regular castor oil or mineral oil-based emulsifiers.
  • If your bath oil or cosmetic preparation needs an emulsifier that solubilizes essential oils and fragrances in water cleanly without synthetic emulsifiers – TRO is a well-established solution for bath oil preparations and soap making.
  • If your current sulfonated oil source has inconsistent active content or pH – Nova Industries controls TRO production parameters tightly, ensuring consistent Total Fatty Matter, active content (50% or 70%), and pH per batch.

  • Iron (Fe) Content: ≤ 0.01%
  • Electrolyte Stability: Good stability in softwater; may require testing in hard water
  • Foam Profile: Moderate foam – manageable in textile and industrial applications
  • Temperature Stability: Effective across a broad temperature range used in textile processing

Stability, Shelf Life & Storage

  • Shelf Life: 24 months from production date under correct storage conditions
  • Storage Temperature: Store between 10°C–35°C – avoid freezing (may cause separation or crystallization) and extreme heat
  • Cold Temperature Behaviour: At temperatures below 10°C, TRO may show turbidity or sediment – this is a physical effect and does not affect quality; warm to 30–40°C and stir to restore homogeneity
  • Avoid: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight; contact with strong acids (below pH 4) which can cause hydrolysis of the sulfate groups
  • Container: Store in lined MS drums, HDPE containers, or stainless-steel tanks – avoid unlined carbon steel
  • Packaging: Available in 200 kg sealed drums – custom quantity and packaging on request

Manufacturing & Quality Control

Turkey Red Oil at Nova Industries is produced through a carefully controlled sulfation and neutralization process:

  • Castor Oil Base: Refined castor oil with controlled acid value and moisture content
  • Sulfonation: Concentrated sulphuric acid added dropwise to castor oil under controlled temperature and agitation to achieve the target degree of sulfation
  • Washing & Neutralisation: Product washed and neutralized with caustic soda to achieve pH 7.0–8.5
  • Active Content Control: Process controlled to achieve target 50% or 70% Total Fatty Matter
  • Quality Testing: pH, Specific Gravity, Appearance, Iron content, Active Content, and Water Dispersibility tested per batch
  • Documentation: Batch CoA, MSDS, and export documents provided

    Industry Applications & Use Cases

    • Textile Dyeing & Finishing

Turkey Red Oil's original and still most important application. It is used as a wetting, levelling, and penetration agent in cotton, wool, and synthetic fibre dyeing. TRO improves dye bath uniformity, prevents streaking, and ensures even dye uptake across fabric lengths.

      Textile Industries
    • Leather Processing & Fat-Liquoring

Used in the leather industry as a fat-liquoring agent and emulsifier in tanning operations. TRO helps distribute fatliquor uniformly through the leather structure, improving softness, flexibility, and finished leather quality without greasy residue.

      Leather Processing & Fat-Liquoring
    • Cosmetics & Bath Products

TRO is used in bath oil preparations as a self-emulsifying agent that allows oils and fragrances to disperse completely in bath water without leaving a greasy ring. It is also used as a superfatting agent in liquid soap making and as an emollient-emulsifier in certain personal care formulations.

      Personal Care & Cosmetics
    • Agriculture & Pesticide Formulations

Used in agricultural formulations as a spreading and wetting agent that improves the adhesion and coverage of pesticide sprays on leaf surfaces. Also used as an emulsifier in oil-water type agricultural preparations and as an organic liquid fertiliser adjuvant.

    FAQ’s

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The name originates from the 19th-century textile dyeing industry, where a brilliant red dye called Turkey Red (derived from madder root) was applied to cotton fabric. The dyeing process required an oil mordant to fix the dye uniformly – sulfonated castor oil was used for this purpose, and the name ‘Turkey Red Oil’ stuck. It was the first synthetic surfactant ever produced commercially, predating synthetic detergents by many decades.

The percentage refers to the Total Fatty Matter (TFM) or active content on weight basis. 70% grade TRO has higher active surfactant content per kg of product and is preferred for applications requiring more concentrated doses, allowing lower addition rates in the formulation. 50% grade is a more dilute form that may be easier to handle and blend in certain textile and cosmetic applications. The choice depends on your dosage requirements and preferred handling characteristics.

Yes. Turkey Red Oil is used in cosmetic preparations primarily as a bath oil emulsifier (it solubilizes fragrance and essential oils in water-based bath preparations without leaving an oily ring), as a superfatting agent in liquid soaps to improve skin feel and clarity, and as an emollient and humectant in certain formulations. Its water-miscible nature makes it particularly useful in rinse-off products and bath preparations.

Yes. Turkey Red Oil is used in the agricultural sector as an emulsifier in certain pesticide formulations and as an organic micronutrient carrier. Its anionic surfactant nature helps improve the spreading and adhesion of agricultural chemical solutions on leaf surfaces. It is also used as an organic fertilizer adjuvant in some markets.

Turkey Red Oil is typically added to the dye bath at 1–5% on weight of fabric (OWF) depending on the fibre type, dye, and specific process. It should be pre-diluted in warm water before addition to the bath for best results. For optimal levelling and penetration, add TRO to the bath before the dyestuff. Exact dosage and addition sequence should be determined through dyehouse trials, as they vary by process and equipment. Our technical team can provide application guidance for specific textile processes.
